DELVE DEEPER into APT9 https://blog.qagoma.qld.gov.au/category/qagoma/asia-pacific-triennial/ SUBSCRIBE to be the first to go behind-the-scenes/ Papua New Guinean artist Simon Gende is known for his often humorous and insightful commentary on international events and icons. Working with saturated colour and stylised or silhouetted figures, Gende paints subjects as diverse as the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York, and Diana, Princess of Wales, lifting them from the pages of major print media and presenting them in an alternative universe — the urban and rural landscape of Papua New Guinea.

Gende was born in Gere in the Gembogl district of Chimbu province and is from the Kuman language group. Inspired by fellow Chimbu artist, the late Mathias Kauage, he began painting in 1989 and is now one of Papua New Guinea’s most respected artists.

Free, and curated for audiences of all ages, the hugely ambitious APT series 'The 9th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art' (APT9) overflows with colour and life and profiles artworks by more than 80 artists, groups and projects from over 30 countries, and is presented across key spaces in the Queensland Art Gallery (QAG) and the entire Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA). The 9th edition of APT, QAGOMA’s flagship exhibition series, continues to foster the development and presentation of the world's most significant works of contemporary Asian, Pacific and Australian art since 1993.
