(8 Oct 2018) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has begun a two-day visit to Hungary, receiving a red carpet welcome with military honours before holding talks with President Janos Ader.
He will also meet with Prime Minister Viktor Orban, and the two will hold a joint news conference later on Monday. Orban was one of the first leaders to congratulate Erdogan on his July reelection and in the past has expressed admiration for "illiberal democracies" such as Turkey and Russia. On Tuesday, Erdogan will also inaugurate the refurbished tomb of Gul Baba, a Turkish poet and dervish who was killed in Budapest in 1541, during its long occupation by the Turks, and speak with Orban at a business forum.
