A global technology icon, Steve Jobs shaped the world of technology more than anyone else. Regarded by many as extremely spellbinding and motivating, he suffered a painful exit from the company he had once founded. Steve Jobs: Early Life & Childhood Steve Jobs was born Steven Paul Jobs on February 24, 1955, in San Francisco, California, U.S., to to Abdulfattah Jandali and Joanne Schieble, an unwed college graduate, who gave him up for adoption. He was adopted by Paul and Clara Jobs. He enrolled at Reed College, but dropped out after just one semester. Thereafter, he worked at Atari, and travelled to India before returning to his childhood home in California. Steve Jobs & Steve Wozniac Founded Apple In 1976, Jobs and Wozniac founded Apple in Steve’s family garage in Los Altos and built their first computer – the Apple I. Then they brought out the Apple II, which became an astounding success. Steve Jobs’ Exit from Apple While Jobs was excited about Apple’s future, a trouble was coming his way – the power shift inside Apple. The Apple Board of directors wanted professional managers to run the fast-growing business. Steve selected Pepsi CEO John Sculley for the job. After the success of Apple II, the company launched the Apple III, but due to some inherent technical problems and high price, it did not sell well. It was a challenging time for Apple, as the company badly needed another hit product. Jobs began work on the ‘Macintosh.’ The Macintosh was unveiled by Jobs with a lot of fanfare and a spellbinding commercial, which had an explosive impact, but the enthusiasm seen at the launch did not translate into sales, and Jobs was staring at an uncertain future. The failure of the Macintosh triggered a power struggle between Steve Jobs and CEO John Sculley, which resulted into Steve Jobs ouster of his own company. Steve Jobs Founded Next Computer Jobs quickly started a new company, NEXT Computer, but the company struggled to sell its expensive computers in a competitive market. Jobs tried hard but could not make NEXT a business success. The PIXAR Story Just after leaving Apple, Steve had bought an animation company which later became Pixar. The first film produced by Pixar was Toy Story and it became a huge success. Pixar soon went public and Jobs became a billionaire! Jobs’ Return to Apple More than 10 years had passed since Jobs had left Apple. The company faced tough competition from Microsoft. Apple was desperately looking for an Operating System that could save them - and this they found in NEXT. In 1997, Apple bought NEXT Computer for over 400 million dollars, and Steve Jobs returned to Apple. Steve had now become a far better leader and brought about several changes at Apple. He had managed to give a new life to Apple but it still needed a hit product and luckily for Jobs, their next product, the iMac, became a huge success. The success of the iMac gave Apple enough money to plan its product line. Launch of iPod In October 2001, Jobs unveiled the iPod. This masterstroke from Steve Jobs gave an enormous lift to Apple's financial results. Steve Jobs Diagnosed with Cancer While Apple was thriving on the business front, Steve Jobs faced the biggest challenge of his life. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2003. He underwent a surgery and expected a full recovery. Riding on the super success of the iPod, Apple refreshed several of its products. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” Cancer Relapse & Launch of iPhone In January 2006, Jobs’ doctors told him that his cancer had returned. In the middle of all this, Jobs unveiled Apple’s most anticipated product – the iPhone. Jobs continued to make intermittent appearances at Apple events, but he looked frail, which led to a lot of media speculation. Launch of iPad The iPad, announced in Jan 2010, was another astounding success for Apple and Apple’s financial health was at all-time high. Steve Jobs’ Death In January 2011, he took a medical leave, which proved his last. Steve Jobs died on October 5, 2011, at his home in Palo Alto. Marriage & Family Steve Jobs married Laurene Powell on March 18, 1991. Their first child, Reed, was born in September 1991. Jobs and Powell had two daughters together, Erin (born in August 1995) and Eve (born in 1998). Jobs’ had one more daughter, Lisa, from an earlier relationship. |
