How to Turn Water Into Ice Instantly |
|
Did you know that you can turn liquid water into ice just by pouring it out of a bottle!? Okay, it might be a little more complicated than that, but this instant ice experiment will be sure to have you and your kids amazed!
Check out this really fun and simple science experiment AND the science behind it! Plus you really only need a couple of supplies from around your house. How it works: Liquid water typically freezes into a solid form of ice when the temperature of the water drops at or below 32°F. This is the temperature that water molecules slow down enough to stick to each other and form a solid crystal. From this experiment, we learned that water does not always follow the rule of freezing at 32°F though. Under the right conditions, purified water that does not have impurities and minerals can drop below the freezing point and remain a liquid and is referred to as supercooled water. Even though the water in the bottles was below the freezing mark, it needed something to kickstart the formation of ice. Pouring the water onto the ice cubes have the supercooled water something to freeze onto and created the ice pillars!
