Wine Spectator 2023 Wine of the Year: Argiano 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Italian Wine Review |
|
Argiano was established in 1580. There are many stories as to how the winery was named: some say it was derived from ‘Ara Janus’, referring to the god Janus. Another potential origin could be ‘the land of the River Orcia’ – known in ancient times as ‘Orgia’ and therefore Argiano.
The winery has went through many ownership changes since the 1600s. In 1992 Contessa Noemi Marone Cinzano bought the estate and engaged famous Giacomo Tachis oenlogist (the creator of Sassicaia, Tignanello and Solaia) as a consultant. Giacomo launched Argiano’s Super Tuscan, Solengo. Under his guidance, the vineyards were extended, and the cellars modernised. In 2013, the winery was sold to Brazilian billionaire André Esteves. He brought in renowned soil scientist Dr. Pedro Parra and CEO & winemaker Bernardino Sani and overhauled both the winemaking facilities and the vineyards. Argiano is large estate but only 54 hectares is devoted to Brunello. This bottle is a blend of six different parcels of 100% Sangiovese Grosso or Brunello grapes. The 2018 vintage was bottled in May 2022, after 30 months in French and Slavonian oak. For more information about this winery, please visit their website at https://www.argiano.net/en/ |
