Produced in 1943 by the Office of War Information for the men and women involved in wartime production, DAY OF BATTLE is a typical industrial incentive film. The plot focuses on the building, sailing, battles and ultimate death of an American Navy aircraft carrier in the Pacific campaign of WWII. The carrier is not mentioned by name but could be USS Lexington, lost in the Battle of the Coral Sea, or USS Yorktown lost at the Battle of Midway.

The film contains terrific images of workers shaping steel for the ship, and constructing the carrier in a naval shipyard. Riveting and welding is shown. The carrier is shown, with TBD-1 Devastator Torpedo planes and Wildcat fighters and dive bombers on deck.
