SAMURAI LIT: Takuan Soho (Part 1) |
|
Moving from the primer series into the actual literature that was "Samurai Literature", I open with the teachings of Zen buddhist monk Takuan Soho. In the days of his life, Soho was a well regarded scholar of Zen Buddhism and became the advisor, and in some cases friend, of many nobles in feudal Japan. One such friend was a famous samurai by the name of Yagyu Munenori, to whom Soho dedicated much of his book, "The Unfettered Mind".
In the later half of the video, I transition from Soho's biography and discuss several excerpts from "The Unfettered Mind", in particular his chapter dedicated to his samurai friend entitled, "Immovable Wisdom". What could a zen buddhist monk, committed to peace & tranquility, possibly teach a samurai, dedicated to war and adversity? Answer: much "The Unfettered Mind" - https://www.amazon.com/Unfettered-Mind-Writings-Master-Swordsman/dp/1590309863/ref=sr_1_1?crid=B5BUYA1FP2KQ&dchild=1&keywords=the+unfettered+mind&qid=1587680082&s=audible&sprefix=the+unfettered%2Caudible%2C151&sr=1-1-catcorr |
