Arnold Palmer | First and Last | The Open Championship

video thumbnail
Known simply as “The King”, Arnold Palmer is widely credited with popularising the game thanks to his charismatic personality and his attacking style, never knowingly backing off.

At the 89th Open Championship, Palmer made an immediate impact on his debut in 1960. Finishing runner-up to Ken Nagle, only missing out on the Claret Jug by one stroke.

The next two tournaments are where the American established his Open legacy, winning back-to-back titles in 1961 and 1962.

Palmer would end his Open career at The 124th Open in 1995, at the home of golf, St Andrews. At the same Championship, an exciting young player by the name of Tiger Woods made his debut.
