The text, that eventually became the book CHICKA CHICKA BOOM BOOK, was commissioned by my mother, Mary Jane Martin, who was the editorial director at Kirchoff/Wohlberg. Originally, it was a selection in a Silver Burdett & Ginn reading program. Kids just loved the poem (which was just the first half of the book we all know and love). The second part was added and published by Simon and Schuster. It's still a smash success after more than 30 years. Only a few folks know the back story of this book...and I'm telling this tale as a tribute to my mom's participation in this legendary children's book. She got the ball rolling and was always thrilled at the book's success.
