The Hawks' took control of the game after a Vince Brookins steal and Steve Carfino made basket and foul. They took an 11-point lead into halftime. The Illini made 13 straight shots to cut a 15-point lead down to only 2 with 9 minutes remaining.

But Steve Krafcisin was huge for Iowa in holding off the Illini comeback, scoring 14 points and getting six rebounds in just the second half. The win put Iowa into a 3-way tie for first place in the Big Ten.
