The National Hockey League has always been popular with sports gamblers but with the newly formed Vegas Knights making the Finals, and sports betting becoming legal in more and more states, NHL hockey betting is poised to blow up.

If you want to get in on the action but you’ve never made a sports bet in your life, we’re here to help.

In this video you’ll get a crash course on how to bet hockey. We’ll go through everything step by step including the odds and the most popular kinds of bets.

We’ll also point you in the direction of our full NHL betting guide which is available for free on WSN.com.

Let’s get started.

NHL BETTING ODDS

The most confusing thing about sports betting for beginners are the odds. We’re talking about the numbers that sportsbooks put next to teams when they post their betting lines.

Odds tell you how much you’ll win on each bet, and they also give you an idea of the chances the bet has of winning.

In the United States, sportsbooks use what are called American Odds.

When you look at almost all bets you’ll see a three-digit number with either a plus or minus sign in front of it.

These are the odds and they’re pretty easy to understand once you learn a few basics.

First, the the negative number is the favorite. That means they’re more likely to win.

The number next to the minus sign tells you how much you have to bet to win $100 in profit.

If the favored team has odds of -150, for example, you’d have to bet $150 to win $100 in profit.

You get paid out LESS when you bet on the favorite because they’re MORE likely to win.

You can bet any amount you want. These are just the odds that the sporsbook will use to calculate how much you win.

So a $150 bet with odds of -150 pays $250 total, that’s your original $150 bet plus $100 profit.

The team with the positive number, on the other hand, is the underdog. Bets on the underdog pay out MORE since they’re LESS likely to win.

If the underdog has odds of +200, for example, a $100 bet on them pays $300 total, that’s your original $100 bet plus the $200 profit.

When you bet online it’s all really simple. Just enter how much you want to bet and the site will automatically calculate how much you will win.

NHL PUCKLINES

Pucklines are basically just hockey’s answer to point spreads. It’s a way for the sportsbook to handicap the better team and give an advantage to the worse team.

Hockey pucklines are always 1.5 goals. That means the favorite has to win by at least two goals for puckline bets on them to win, while underdogs can lose by one goal, or win the game outright to cover the puckline.

In this example you can see that each team also has odds attached to them. The odds work just like we explained earlier.

The minus sign is the favorite and tells you how much you have to bet to win $100 in profit.

The plus sign is the underdog and tells you how much profit you’ll win for every $100 you bet.

NHL MONEYLINES

Moneyline bets are one of the easiest bets you can make so they’re great for beginners.

Just pick which team you think will win. If they win the game, you win your bet.

Since the better team is going to win most of the time, sportsbooks pays out more when you bet on the underdog and less when you bet the favorite.

When you see a moneyline bet, you’ll notice odds next to each team.

Unlike the puckline, the odds for the moneyline can be way longer for the underdog and way shorter for the favorite.

That means if you think the underdog has a chance at a big upset, the moneyline is a great way to get a big payout.
It also means that if the favorite is a lock to win, you’ll have to bet a lot to win a little.

NHL OVER/UNDERS

Over/unders are another super simple way for beginners to bet on hockey, and you don’t even need to choose which team will win the game.

Over/unders are also called totals and it’s a bet on the total combined goals of both teams.

First the sportsbook sets a line, that’s how many combined goals they think both teams will score. Then you bet on whether the real number will be over or under their line.

If you think the real number will be more, bet the Over. If you think it’ll be less, bet the under.

Each option also has odds that work the same way we explained earlier.
