Hindi vs. Urdu - Are Hindi and Urdu the same language? Actually, Hindi and Urdu are two variants of the same language. Although they are relatively the same spoken language, they have two distinct writing systems. Hindi is written using the Devanagari script, while Urdu is derived from the Persian script. Nearly 425 million people speak Hindi as a first language and around 120 million as a second language. Hindi is the most popular language spoken in India. It's the official language of India, English being the other official language.

Urdu is spoken as a first language by nearly 70 million people and as a second language by more than 100 million people, predominantly in Pakistan and India. It is the official state language of Pakistan.
