Stomach paralysis lawsuits filed against manufacturers of Ozempic, Mounjaro and Wegovy Over gastroparesis and gallbladder surgery claims

In this episode of David v. Goliath, hosts Matthew Dolman and Stanley Gipe discuss claims involving the use of Ozempic, Mounjary and Wegovy and subsequent claims of stomach paralysis, gastritis, ileus, or gastric intestinal obstruction within 30 days following use of these medications. Several law firms are taking claims wherein the potential client underwent gallbladder surgery although the science may not be as strong on such claims.

Originally designed for individuals with type 2 diabetes, Ozempic has taken off for its off-label use as a weight loss medication. However, there’s been a recent slew of claims from people using Ozempic and other GLP-1 (Glucagon-like peptide 1, abbreviated to GLP-1, is a hormone naturally produced in the gut and released in response to food. It causes reduced appetite and the release of insulin) drugs involving negative side effects and other health issues from gastroparesis (known as "stomach paralysis") ileus and gastric intestinal blockage, some of which require surgical intervention.

Ozempic, Mounjary and Wegovy lawsuits previously filed in Federal court have now been consolidated before Judge Gene E.K. Pratter in United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania as if February 2, 2024. At the time of consolidation, fifty-five (55) lawsuits were transferred to the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

The lawsuits allege that Novo Nordisk (manufacturer of Ozempic and Wegovy) and Eli Lilly (manufacturer of Mounjaro) of failing to warn both the general public and medical professionals of the very serious health risks associated with the use of these diabetes medications and weight loss drugs.

There is some medical literature and anecdotal evidence that semaglutide (Ozempic and Wegovy) is linked to stomach paralysis (gastroparesis). However, the amount of adverse event reports filed with the FDA forced the agency and eventually the drug manufacturers to change the warning label of Ozempic (and Mounjaro/Wegovy) in September of 2023, for the potential of intestinal blockage. Keep in mind many individuals began using the product before the warning label was changed. Further, the warning label does not mention gastroparesis or other gastrointestinal issues.

While these drugs are designed to slow stomach emptying so users feel full for longer periods of time, we have numerous clients who can no longer properly digest food. The food simply sits in their intestines requiring medical and even surgical intervention. Further, we have a number of clients who have suffered from excessive vomiting to the extent they lost teeth.
