The Tesla Model Y comes with an impressive EPA rating of 326 miles on the Long Range All Wheel Drive Model. Through various tests on the highway, we have shown that this is not a realistic number to count on, at least at highway speeds.

What happens though when you add cold weather to a highway trip? The range you should expect in a Tesla Model Y varies on different factors. Speed is the greatest impact to that range, however, when the weather gets cold, get ready for an additional step change in your available range.

Utilizing the same route I did our summer test in, I put the Tesla Model Y LR AWD to the test. Charging the car to 100% and arriving at a supercharger at 0% yielded some surprising numbers.

The new Tesla Model Y, and Model 3, have a heat pump, which significantly reduces the losses in range in cold weather. That said, there is still quite a hit to the range you should expect when the temperatures start to drop.
