STORYLINE:

United States and Pakistani troops delivered aid to the devastated village of Chinari in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir on Friday - the start of the Eid al-Fitr celebration marking the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan.

The US military used Blackhawk helicopters to deliver tents, blankets, food, and other badly needed supplies to those in need.

The area is where a US helicopter allegedly came under fire while ferrying supplies earlier this week.

US Army Colonel Mark McKearn said: "We have never stopped delivering supplies in this area and we are very happy to help. We are very comfortable with the Pakistan military and their support".

US soldiers also gave sweets to young children.

Efforts are being stepped-up to deliver much-needed aid ahead of the Himalayan region's fierce winter.

For most of Pakistan, Friday was the start of Eid al-Fitr, but Pakistan's president, General Pervez Musharraf asked Pakistanis to tone down festivities out of respect for quake victims.

The October 8 earthquake killed about 80-thousand people and left more than three (m) million people homeless, most in the disputed Kashmir region.

The United Nations says it needs 550 (m) million US dollars in emergency aid for quake victims, but that donors have pledged only 131 (m) million US dollars.
