-- PRESENTATION: YŌSHIN RYŪ NAGINATA-JUTSU --
This school is a martial style that was invented by Akiyama Shirōhyōe, a samurai who was a personal bodyguard to Tachibana Muneshige, the second Daimyō of the Tachibana clan from Yanagawa in Chikugo province when he retreated to Tanakura in Ōshū after the defeat of Sekigahara which followed the death of Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
In the sixth year of Genna Era (1620), Tachibana Muneshige was given back his ancient fief of Yanagawa with its 120 000 Koku income after twenty years. The school then became the “Otome Ryū” of the Yanagawa estate, that is a secret style that cannot be taught or even showed to others outside the clan or even to other clan members that do not practice it. It became the style reserved to female domestic staff who were performing escort duties.
It is said that it was a Sōgōbujutsu, an overall martial art regrouping many techniques, among which sword, Tanbō (short staff), Kusarigama (sickle with a weighted chain), Nagayari (long spear), Tansō (short spear), and hand-to-hand combat techniques, going so far as to include knowledge in the art of healing.
