As Hurricane Florence looms near the North Carolina Coast, we're remembering Hurricane Fran, which made landfall near Cape Fear on the evening of Sept. 5, 1996. At the time, it was the most expensive natural disaster in North Carolina history, causing more than $1 billion of damage in the state.
