How Interim championships work in the UFC.

There are 2 types of championships in the UFC Undisputed and Interim.

The undisputed championship is the regular one we’re all familiar with. The title for the best fighter in that weight class, until you lose your belt or you give it up.

But the interim championship is sort of a secondary championship that the UFC creates whenever a champion is inactive, usually due to injury, suspension, or being occupied with a fight in another weight class.

Usually the undisputed champ and the interim champ will have a fight to unify their belts and only have 1 undisputed champion.

But there are cases where this didn’t happen because for example a champion retired, or the interim champion was stripped.

The Interim belt is sometimes seen as a glorified #1 contendership or a marketing tool to have a champion vs champion matchup,
