The Russian Federation says that it will strengthen military capacity in the west and north-west of the country in response to Finland joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

Security and defence analyst Professor Michael Clarke says the move is the biggest development in European military history since the remilitarisation of Germany in 1955.

The Russia military is now in a much worse situation he says, as 830 miles, or 1300 kilometres, have now been added to its borders with a NATO member.
