Dr. Lu is a psychiatrist, a Professor Emeritus, and the recipient of the nation's first endowed professorship in cultural psychiatry. Dr. Lu describes a key epiphany and notable mentors in his life that inspired his career in cultural psychiatry. Dr. Lu describes the founding of UCSF's Asian Focus Unit, a landmark inpatient treatment program that served as a national model and trained a generation of cultural psychiatrists. Dr. Lu also highlights key achievements in his work with professional organizations like the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and others.

For Dr. Lu's ongoing work as a mentor, scholar, educator, and leader, he has received numerous awards including a Special American Psychiatric Association Presidential Commendation for his work in cultural psychiatry and a Lifetime Achievement in Education Award from the Association for Academic Psychiatry.
