Former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan was rushed to a hospital after he was injured in firing during his rally at Wazirabad in Pakistan's Punjab province. One of his supporters was feared dead in what his party called an "assassination attempt" on the former cricketer during his ongoing Lahore-to-Islamabad march against the army establishment-backed central government.
His right leg bandaged, Mr Khan was seen waving as he was shifted into an SUV, indicating that the injury wasn't serious. He was taken to Lahore, 100 km away. It brought back chilling memories of how another former PM, Benazir Bhutto, was assassinated during a rally in 2007. Imran Khan was shot in the leg but was stable while being taken to hospital. The attacker later told the police that he was "not backed by anyone" and was simply "angry at how Imran Khan has been misleading the people". There were reports of another shooter, with an AK-47 rifle, at the spot, but these could not be verified.
