KU Food 4 Thought Episode #14

video thumbnail
KU Food 4 Thought 2021 ~ Episode #14 features Kiwi KU instructor, Sensei Hayden Spatcher, Kancho of the Christchurch Koryukan, speaking with Hamilton Koryukan chief instructor, Renshi Erin Gamble. A highly personal, and very insightful conversation, with two seriously down-to-earth martial artists, this wonderful dialogue truly examples both the nature and character of the likeminded people who proudly come together in pursuit of common goals through Koryu Uchinadi. This is another 30-min presentation that should be watched/listened to by any/all KU learners everywhere.

HAPV-Theory
An idea, first introduced by Patrick McCarthy, that particular empty-handed [one-against-one] acts of physical violence, are habitual in social human behaviour. Additionally, that such violent behaviour also served as the original contextual premise for Shaolin-based empirical observation. Moreover, that such a study ultimately led to the structuring of a catalytic-like 2-person re-enactment method of practice. The practice provided a basis from which to discover and hone highly functional fighting concepts. Such concepts became institutionalised learning and provided the idea for culminating skills through solo re-enactment routines. By linking together one side of the 2-person practices, into geometrical routines, something greater than the sum total of their individual parts was created. These solo-routines served to perpetuate a tradition from one generation to another; This is how Kata evolved.

Koryu Uchinadi Riai-Tegumi
古流沖縄手理合手組
Riai-Tegumi is a highly challenging and catalytic-like 2-person engagement activity, which bring learners into contact with unscripted and random exchanges of physical violence [i.e. HAPV] while using timeless KU [and/or AKJJ] templated application response practices as the basis of discovery and growth.

Beginning engagement from either a stand-up, clinch, and or ground position, offensive and defensive practices feature percussive impact and/or seizing, to encourage escapes and counter activity, using varying levels of aggressive resistance, to continuously test the veracity of one’s learning, skill and progress.

Templates?
Mistakenly believed to be single techniques, or fixed postures, the term, "TEMPLATE," is actually better understood as a collective sequence of movements, representing highly functional application practices. Methodically shaped [形] though empirical observation and handed down over time, such into ritualised moulds [型] example time-honoured escape & counter measures and are what we refer to as instutionalised learning.

A Totally Unique Delivery System
A completely systematised method of learning how to effectively deal with scenario-driven and timeless acts of physical violence; Here’s a 2-person application practice method that brings science and art together into a catalytic-like engagement practice.

This simple process is totally unique and has been likened to a pathway that bridges the dysfunctional gap between kata and kumite. It clearly serves to strengthen the delivery system of any traditional Karate style without adversely affecting its cosmetic appearance nor taking anything away from its cultural heritage.
