All Black Lives Matter: Exploring My Own Double Consciousness | Marcus Bell | TEDxSUNYCortland

video thumbnail
All Black lives matter. Those taken by the state, as well as those taken by other Black people. If we are to dream of a more just and equitable future, we must be conscious of—and honest about—both. In this talk, Dr. Marcus Bell explores and explains his how double consciousness. Marcus is an assistant professor of sociology and a Diversity Faculty Fellow at SUNY Cortland. In his work, Marcus explores processes of ideology, inequality and identity, focusing on how they intersect, contradict and reinforce one another in individual and collective experience. Broadly speaking, Marcus uses qualitative methods to decompose the numerous, and at times, conflicting ways that racial ideology, racial inequality and racial identity are constructed and experienced, and how these processes change over time. He has published widely on the topic of racial identity, and he teaches courses on race and ethnicity, social stratification, crime and punishment, and the sociology of hip-hop. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
