The Omega Speedmaster Silver Snoopy (311.32.42.30.04.003) is one of the greatest Speedmaster Professional limited editions of all time. This deceptively simple chronograph watch has become one of the most collectible and valuable Omega watches of the twenty-first century, and it is one of the few modern Omegas that has the cachet and collector community to rival the Rolex Daytona, Submariner, and GMT-Master II. Our preowned Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch “Silver Snoopy” is a prime example of the sports watch that turned a black-and-white cartoon into solid gold.

Launched in 2015, the Silver Snoopy II was the sequel to a lower-profile watch launched for the 2003 model year. But while the 5,441-piece 2003 watch kept a low profile during the intervening years, the 2015 model became a phenomenon. Technically, the “Snoopy II” is the “Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Apollo XIII 45th Anniversary” limited edition of 1,970 pieces. Everyone calls it the “Snoopy 2” or “Silver Snoopy 2.”

Critically, the 2015 Snoopy pulled out all the stops to create a sense of occasion missing in the 2003 models. Starting with the 42mm steel Moonwatch case, Omega added a black-and-white dial designed to recall the printed “Peanuts” comic strip that launched Snoopy the beagle. A black ceramic tachymeter frames the sapphire crystal; under the crystal is a white dial with black hands and applied blocks of solid Super Luminova. Snoopy himself lies prone at nine o’clock alongside the thought bubble reading “failure is not an option” – a line from the Apollo XIII film.

Fourteen comic-style frames start at 12 o’clock and reference the 14 seconds during which NASA astronauts fired rockets to correct Apollo XIII’s errant course. Naturally, an Omega Speedmaster Professional was used to time the maneuver. All hands, the indices, the bezel, and Snoopy’s figure are luminescent in the dark.

Inside the case, this Omega Speedmaster uses the Moonwatch caliber 1861. It is a manual wind mechanical movement based on the Lemania 1873 ebauche, and versions of it have been flying with NASA since its acceptance as caliber 861 in 1968. Caliber 1861 includes a 48 hour power reserve, a beat rate of 21,600 vibrations per hour, and a chronograph drive train composed of a cam selector and a lateral clutch. Water resistance is rated to 50 meters.

On its reverse side, the Omega Silver Snoopy II incorporates two artisanal elements. The first is a sterling silver medallion depicting Snoopy as an astronaut; this is the image of Snoopy drawn by Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz specifically for NASA. The second hand-crafted feature of this Speedmaster caseback is the grand feu blue enamel below the figure of Snoopy. This navy-blue base has been enhanced with metallic flakes to create the impression of a bottomless cosmos.

Schulz’s NASA-specific depiction of Snoopy in a flight suit was intended as the basis for NASA’s “Silver Snoopy” award. This honor was a recognition bestowed on special employees, contractors, and suppliers to the NASA space program. Critically, the Silver Snoopy always was awarded by the astronauts themselves, and NASA’s October 1970 recognition was an act of gratitude for the superb performance of Omega Speedmaster chronographs during the recovery of the damaged Apollo 13 command module.
