Canada is known to be cold, but the biting winds and bitter temperatures blanketing the west have shattered records in some areas and there’s no immediate end in sight. Winter warnings and watches cover the entire country tonight, from coast to coast. Across Eastern Canada, there are warnings, watches and travel advisories as some powerful storms move through. In the West, bone-chilling temperatures are sweeping across the Prairies and parts of B.C. making it feel anywhere from -40 to -50 with the wind chill. Catherine Urquhart has the latest from this cold snap affecting the West.

In Taiwan, millions of voters have rebuffed China and elected a presidential candidate from the incumbent Democratic People’s Party for an unprecedented third term in office. Thousands gathered to celebrate the DPP’s win today, which will extend its eight-year term in the presidential office. Lai Ching-te, the party’s vice-president since 2020 will be taking over the top job and will look to lead the island country through its testy relationship with Beijing as David Akin reports.

The deadline is now less than a week away for hundreds of thousands of small businesses to repay a federal loan. The Canadian Emergency Business Account (CEBA) offered businesses tens of thousands of dollars to help with the impact of COVID-19 shutdowns. But as the payback deadline looms, thousands are now turning to the world of independent online lenders for last-minute help. Abigail Bimman has more.

A Quebec artist is launching a lawsuit against a member of an anti-racism group accusing them of damaging his reputation. At issue is a puppet that Franck Sylvestre uses in one of his performances that some have criticized as a depiction of Blackface. But as Mike Armstrong explains, the artist argues that the controversial prop is simply a caricature of himself.

Sharks have long been perceived as the apex predator of the sea, but despite the reputation, a new study has found human activity remains the biggest threat to these animals. It’s also a frank global assessment of whether measures such as the ban on shark finning have worked at all. Heidi Petracek explains.
