Joya Banerjee -- Co-Founder of the Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS, NYC

GYCA is a youth-led network of over 7,000 young leaders working to end the spread of HIV in 173 countries worldwide. GYCA empowers young people with the knowledge, skills, resources and opportunities they need to be effective agents of change in their communities. Joya co-founded the network at age 22 with a diverse coalition of young global leaders, directed the organization for five years, and now serves on its Advisory Board. She holds a B.A. in Human Rights and Political Science from Barnard College of Columbia University, and a Master of Science in Global Health and Population from the Harvard School of Public Health.

Joya has experience in HIV/AIDS as an activist, researcher, implementer, grantmaker and fundraiser across sectors, including the United Nations, the US Government, small and large NGOs and academic institutions. She currently works as a Manager at GBCHealth, a coalition of 200 private sector companies tackling the world's most pressing health challenges. Joya has short and long-term field experience in 14 countries, and she believes in approaches to public health and development that prioritize the leadership of the Global South.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event.
