When I say this is a common question I really mean it. I've been asked "does masturbation affect muscle growth" a million times over the years, and if you just check the multi-million view counts on most "masturbation and bodybuilding" YouTube videos you'll see just how many guys are curious about it. The basic worry is that ejaculation will cause a decrease in testosterone, and since testosterone is the primary muscle building hormone in the body that this will lead to reduced hypertrophy. However, in looking at the research there's simply no hard evidence (no pun intended) that this is the case and that it negatively affects your ability to build muscle. All that's seen are minor transient short term fluctuations that wouldn't be significant enough to affect muscle growth and which then return to baseline shortly after. (PMID 12659241, 11760788, 27495935, 6539133, 12914589) Keep in mind though that this is speaking purely in terms of direct physical effects. While masturbation does not appear to impact muscle building via physical means such as testosterone, there's also the psychological side to consider, especially when you factor porn into the mix which is something I generally think is best avoided and can be legitimately harmful. If excessive masturbation/porn use is causing your motivation/mood/focus to be hindered and that is then having a downstream effect (also no pun intended) on your workouts, nutrition or sleep, obviously it could have a negative impact in that way. Each person is different in that regard and so that's something you'll need to figure out for yourself.
