Lance Quiding's TEDxJohannesburg talk unveils the transformative potential of aquaponics in African agriculture. As an aquaponics farmer, Quiding passionately presents a vision where fish and vegetable cultivation synergise in a circular ecosystem. He contends that this innovative approach not only ensures food security but also aligns with all 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Quiding emphasises the crucial components of the aquaponics value chain—knowledge, skills, technique, technology, markets, and government support. His talk serves as a call to action, urging stakeholders to collaborate in creating a holistic aquaponics ecosystem that empowers local communities and stimulates economic growth across Africa. Lance, a native of Johannesburg with a Mechanical Engineering Diploma from Cape Peninsula University of Technology, initially worked at the South African Motor Corporation (SAMCOR) before shifting to managing Chitwa Chitwa Game Lodge in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve. After a sequence of entrepreneurial ventures, he founded Integrated Aquaculture (Pty) Ltd in Hekpoort, a commercial fish farm integrating aquaponics and aquaculture. He aims to boost interest in these fields at various scales, leveraging his technical knowledge.
