While enormous franchises have dominated the sci-fi film genre for decades, not every great sci-fi movie is meant to be a part of one. Some films are so well done, and tell such a complete story, that a follow-up would be unnecessary — and often, if one is attempted, it’s a total failure.
Other sci-fi movies open the door for expansion, but never have the opportunity to explore it.
