Why does music fascinate us? Where does the beauty of music lie?
Mr. Takeuchi, the leading theremin player in Japan, continues to pursue the beauty of music through his performances.
What does it mean to play the theremin for Mr. Takeuchi, who has overcome his illness and continues to take on challenges? Masami Takeuchi is a professional theremin player living in Hamamatsu.

In 1993, he moved to Russia where he studied theremin performance under Lydia Kavina, a disciple of Lev Theremin. He has contributed to spreading theremin culture by releasing CD albums, playing in multiple concerts in and outside of Japan, making appearances on TV and radio, publishing books and research papers, and teaching theremin performance to his students.

He launched Matryoshika-shaped theremins called Matryomin in 2003 and set the Guinness World Record for the “Largest Theremin Ensemble” in 2013.

During his performance back in 2016, he suffered a stroke. Despite his paralysis on one side of his body, he continues to perform and played theremin for the NHK TV series in 2022. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
