Why NSW Wants to Shake Up School Start Times

NSW SCHOOL HOURS
What do you think about your school's start and finish time? NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet says for a lot of parents it's not working, and some schools in the state might be trialling different hours later this year. People have been talking about this issue for ages, because changing start and finishing times might make it easier for parents to juggle their work commitments or help with traffic congestion in the morning rush, or maybe even help you do better at school. That's the idea, anyway. A trial of longer school days will begin in NSW later this year, and schools will be able to apply to take part. Education experts say the most important thing is well, education, and any changes should be about what helps you learn best.

MADAGASCAR CYCLONE
Help's on the way for people in Madagascar. The island country was hit by a huge cyclone over the weekend. More than 20 people have died and fifty thousand people have had to leave their homes. The cyclone brought heavy rain, flooding or washing away entire towns and villages. The UN's World Food Program is helping out the worst hit areas, but the country's already dealing with the aftermath of another deadly cyclone from two weeks ago.

GUN SALUTE
Just in case you weren't sure if the UK was taking the Queen's Platinum Jubilee seriously, here's some explosive proof. Simultaneous gun salutes sounded out in Edinburgh, and London's Green Park at midday local time. It's all to mark Queen Elizabeth's 70th anniversary on the throne. Not to be outdone, there was a 62 gun salute at the Tower of London, too. But all this is just the start. There will be four days of national events in June to mark Queen Elizabeth's platinum jubilee.

WINTER OLYMPICS MASCOT
Merchandise featuring Bing Dwen Dwen, the panda mascot of the Winter Olympic Games are flying out of shops in China. The ice covered panda Olympic mascot, whose name roughly translates to Ice Child, is selling like hotcakes in Beijing. Ever since 1968, with this ski man thing called Schuss, every Olympic games has had a mascot. In Sydney we had Olly, Millie and Syd. Last year it was Miraitowa and Someity and then my personal faves Wenlock and Mandeville from the London 2012 games. Don't worry, I do not know what they're meant to be either. The design for Bing Dwen Dwen was picked from more than 5 and a half thousand submissions. But it's no surprise a Panda, China's national animal was the winning entry. With crowds restricted to super low numbers inside Olympic events, locals say that buying merchandise like Bing Dwen Dwen is one way to feel connected to the games, and to be fair, he's just really cute.

ANCIENT SKATING TRADITION
Deep in the woods of Georgia, an ancient tradition is being brought back to life. The art of making and riding snow skates out of wood. It's the first time a competition of its kind has ever been held and 28 participants signed up to race against the clock. The organisers of the event hope it'll keep the tradition alive for years to come.

LITTER ART
This is a model of our world made from plastic waste. Measuring in at 4 metres tall, it takes up a fair chunk of the room. It's on display at an aquarium in Jerusalem, and the artist hopes it'll get people to think about the ways plastic pollution is affecting our oceans.

BRIDGE EXPLOSION
This is a controlled bridge demolition in Germany, don't worry. What you can see left standing is the new bridge that's set to replace it! It was a really long and tall bridge. In fact, it's the first time ever a bridge of its height has been blown up in Germany. Measuring in at 71.9 meters tall, and 485.5 meters long.
