If you receive a new message in WhatsApp application then you should see a number on the top of the WhatsApp icon which shows you how many messages are still unread. But if you are not seeing this WhatsApp message notification count even though notification is enabled for WhatsApp application then what you do is go to "settings". Go to "Apps". Then we will scroll down and we will look for WhatsApp application.

Open this WhatsApp application. Go to this notifications and here there is one important thing that you have to see and that is even if this "show notifications" is enabled you have to make sure that this option, app icon badges, it is also enabled. This will show you how many messages are unread in WhatsApp. Then for this chats show notifications also should be enabled. So make sure that all of these options you see here it is enabled.
