Mental Health in the New Normal: Shaping Our COVID Stories | Dr. Rachel Wernicke | TEDxGeorgeMasonU

video thumbnail
Recent statistics from the CDC show that depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues are rising in the context of COVID. Particularly in the face of prolonged uncertainty and isolation, many people report feeling despair when they imagine their futures in this new normal. So, how do we emotionally survive let alone thrive in these circumstances over which we have little control? Part of the answer lies in the narratives that we create about who we are and what is possible in the face of adversity. What will our own COVID stories be? We will explore how we can, even now, shape our narratives in ways that can help us survive both the current pandemic and the predicted surge in mental health challenges. Dr. Rachel Wernicke is a clinical psychologist, currently serving as Associate Dean and Chief Mental Health Officer in University Life. She completed her doctorate in psychology at American University and her advanced clinical training at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School. Dr. Wernicke has provided leadership in college student mental health for more than 15 years. At Mason her work includes engaging the Mason community in a public health approach to suicide prevention in partnership with the Jed Foundation and increasing access to mental health services to under-served students. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
