Naperville Public Library Developing Business Incubator Center

The Naperville Public Library has always had a number of products and services to help businesses from printers and copiers, to a computer lab to investment resources.

But in an effort to support those starting a new business, the library is now working alongside the Naperville Development Partnership to package its space and resources together in an initiative called Biblio-Tech.

"For the library it's really a matter of maximizing resources we already have, doing programs we're already doing, but pulling them together in a way that we can brand it and market it directly and more clearly to the business community," said Julie Rothenfluh, Executive Director for the library.

Bilio-Tech is a sort of business incubator with the idea of helping innovative entrepreneurs grow and nurture their ideas into a successful company.

Part of the plan is to bring in experts to address topics like intellectual property, incorporation, and patent research.

Business Librarian Kent Palmer, who already helps patrons in job search, financial literacy and business development, will lead this new initiative.

"That's what we're here for, why we work in the library to help people with their information needs," said Palmer. "So to be able to do that with entrepreneurs that come up with these great ideas is a very exciting prospect."

The library is also finishing its new media lab at its 95th street location.

The library invested about $25,000 in additional technology like a 3D printer and scanner, iMac computers, and software for learning computer programming and how to make Android and iPhone applications.

These items will be helpful for the business community but also for the community at large.

"Libraries are really about access and a lot of these different hardware [and] software kinds of things are expensive and can't always afford to have those themselves so by having them in the library, that provides the access to everybody," said Rothenfluh.

The library plans to host an open house for the media lab some time next month.

As for Biblio-Tech, there's no specific launch date yet but the library hopes to roll it out by the end of spring.
