HBO's The Last of Us, based on the 2013 video game of the same name, is using its silliest scenes to set up its most devastating twist. The Last of Us takes place in post-apocalyptic America, as humanity struggles to survive a mutated fungus known as Cordyceps that turns people into zombies. The main characters, Joel and Ellie, do their best to survive encounters with both the infected and the healthy as they make their way west in search of Joel's brother, Tommy.

The Last of Us has enjoyed immediate success and has become one of HBO's biggest ever releases. While those who have played The Last of Us video game already know how the story goes, others are in for a devastating turn of events. The story of The Last of Us is tragic on both a global scale and a more personal level, but sprinkles moments of levity between Joel and Ellie throughout each episode. Sadly, these silly scenes are only building toward The Last of Us' saddest moment.
