Before there was Germany, there was Germania. But what exactly is Germania? Well, it was a historical region in Central Europe during the Roman era, home to a large number of Germanic tribes, including: the Bructeri, Chatti, Cherusci, Frisii, Marcomanni, and Marsi, among others. To the Roman Empire, it seemed a logical area for expansion of their continental holdings. However, under the leadership of Arminius, the disparate Germanic tribes (mostly) united in opposition to Roman conquest, forming the so-called German Confederation. The strength of this military alliance was proven at the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest - also known as the Varian Disaster - in which the Romans lost some 16,000 to 20,000 soldiers, including three legions, and thereafter abandoned their plans to conquer Germania. The German Confederation was not to last though and, in time, the various Germanic tribes would again splinter. That being said, this ghost country in many ways represents the first attempt at unification of the German people and, its admittedly brief existence, would nonetheless greatly alter the course of European history.
