Understanding and Supporting Kinship Caregivers | Angela Tobin | TEDxOhioStateUniversity

What happens to a child when their parents are unable to care for them? You may have heard of foster care , but have you heard of kinship care? Kinship care, when a relative becomes the primary caregiver for a child, has better outcomes for children and is much more common than foster care. Through sharing academic research and personal experiences, Dr. Angela Tobin will challenge you to imagine what it might be like to unexpectedly step into the role of a kinship caregiver, who receives little support yet has the power to change the trajectory of a child’s life. Angela Tobin was inspired to learn more about kinship care after witnessing her grandparent raise their grandchild, her cousin for over 10 years. Through founding and leading an online support group for caregivers, as well as delving into research experiences around kinship care, Angela has made it her mission to listen and amplify the stories of kinship families, who so often are unseen and under-supported. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
