The ATP Finals 2022 in Turin will be the season ending event of the men's Tennis ATP Tour. The Top 8 Tennis players of the season will be fighting for the trophy and some last valuable points for the fight for the top spots in the ranking at the end of the 2022 ATP season.
By winning the US Open at only 19 years old, Carlos Alcaraz became the youngest ATP No 1 Player in Tennis history. He will enter the ATP Finals as the No1 in the ATP Race. Only his compratriot Rafael Nadal, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Casper Ruud ( 2 time Grand Slam finalist in 2022) still have a theoretical chance of stealing that year end number 1 position from Alcaraz. Previously known as the ATP World Tour Finals, the Tennis Masters Cup, the Tennis world championships or the Grand Prix Masters, it is maybe the most prestigious tennis tournaments on the calendar after the 4 Grand Slams (Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon, US Open). Interestingly, Rafael Nadal, currently the winner of the most ever Grand Slams (22), has never managed to win the ATP Finals. He did however qualify for the tournmament a record 16 consecutive times (2005-2020). ____________________________________ QUALIFICATION To qualify for the ATP Finals a player has to either finish the ATP Race in one of the Top 7 spots or win at least one Grand Slam and finish in the Top 20. As the Grand Slam champions usually end the year in a very high ranked position, fans often mistakenly think that the Top 8 players of the ATP Race qualify for the tournament. But the 8th spot is only given to the No 8 in the Race if no Slam winner finished in 9th-20th. It might seem unlikely to happen, but this very year Novak Djokovic won his 7th Wimbledon title but might end the ATP Race only in 9th. (unless he still gains enough points at the Paris Masters) Due to his Grand Slam win he did already qualify for the ATP Finals in October. Of course the only reason he didn't collect more ATP Ranking points this year is the fact that he couldn't enter several countries and therefore couldn't play several tournaments due to him not being vaccinated. The 2022 ATP season surely had lots of things happen. ____________________________________ FORMAT 1970 - 71 Round-Robin (winner decided on best performed player) 1982 - 84 Knockout tournament, 12 players 1985 Knockout tournament, 16 players All other years: 8 players divided into two groups of 4 The 4 players of each group play each other (3 matches total) and the best player of group 1 plays the second best player of group two in the Semi-Final and vice-versa. ____________________________________ ATP RANKING POINTS - each Round Robin match win: 200 point - winning the SF: 400 points - winning the Final: 500 points All points are added to each other. By winning all 5 matches the champion can get 1500 points. It is theoretically possible to win only one Round-robin match and win the tournament (gaining 1100 points). But this has never happened yet. ___________________________________ LOCATION (indicated in the top right corner of the screen) 1970 Tokyo, Japan 1971 Paris, France 1972 Barcelona, Spain 1973 Boston, USA 1974 Melbourne, Australia 1975 Stockholm, Sweden 1976 Houston, USA 1977 - 89 New York, USA 1990 - 95 Frankfurt, Germany 1996 - 99 Hanover, Germany 2000 Lisbon, Portugal 2001 Sydney, Australia 2002 Shanghai, China 2003 - 04 Houston, USA 2005 - 08 Shanghai, China 2009 - 20 London, England 2021 - 25 Turin, Italy ____________________________________ TIMESTAMPS 00:00 1970s [Masters Grand Prix] 00:47 1980s [Masters Grand Prix] 01:40 1990s [ATP Tour World Championships] 02:35 2000 -08 [Tennis Masters Cup] 03:23 2009 -16 [ATP World Tour Finals] 04:32 2017 -21 [ATP Finals] |
