StuG Ace Hugo Primozic Who Destroyed 24 Soviet Tanks In One Day! |
|
Hugo Primozic was one of Germany's Sturmgeschütz(StuG) aces during World War II and was noted for his quick reactions, clever tactical use of ground and the icy nerve which in tense situations enabled him to hold his fire until his opponent had closed to point-blank range.
Primozic joined the Sturmartillerie as a platoon leader in the newly formed German StuG Battalion 667 at the end of June 1942. On 15 September 1942 the Russians launched a heavy tank and infantry assault in the area of the battalion. Hugo Primozic and two other assault guns drove forward to engage the attacking enemy. The battle was fierce, with Primozic and his two wingmen repositioning constantly to avoid being destroyed themselves. However the Russian attack was defeated, and Primozic’s StuG alone destroyed 24 tanks on that day. He was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on September 19, 1942 promoted to Staff Sergeant. In the five months from September 1942 to January 1943, Hugo Primozic destroyed 60 enemy tanks and was awarded both the Knights Cross of the Iron Cross and the Oak Leaves. Hugo Primozic was the first non commissioned officer in the Wehrmacht to be awarded the Oak Leaves to the Knight’s Cross and one of only seven NCOs in total to receive the Oak Leaves.
