Gel pens are a marvel of everyday technology. Inside, they house a tiny ball bearing, often made of tungsten carbide, which rotates as you write, dispensing the gel ink evenly onto the paper. This ink is a gel-based, water-resistant pigment that flows smoothly onto the page.

Those little silica gel packets you find in shoeboxes or electronics are used to absorb moisture and prevent damage. Your credit cards have holograms for added security, and those seemingly random numbers on your toaster's dial indicate the duration of toasting in minutes.
