Shotokan karate, like many traditional martial arts, has evolved over time to prioritize safety and discipline over the potential for causing harm. Gichin Funakoshi, the founder of Shotokan, was a strong advocate for using karate as a form of physical and mental development, rather than as a means of causing harm to others. He believed that the ultimate goal of karate should be to improve oneself, rather than to defeat others. As a result, many of the techniques used in Shotokan have been modified to reduce the risk of injury and to emphasize the importance of control, precision, and proper form. This change in focus is reflected in the development of competition karate, which is now a sport and has rules and regulations that prohibit dangerous techniques to be used, giving priority to control and points, rather than incapacitating the opponent.
