'If we keep knocking, getting that close TITLE WILL HAPPEN!' 💪 Mikel Arteta | Arsenal 2-1 Everton

Reaction from Mikel Arteta at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday after his Arsenal side played their part on the final day of the Premier League season by coming from behind to beat Everton, but the 20-year wait for a Premier League title goes on.

Kai Havertz scored in the 89th minute to give Arsenal a 2-1 victory on Sunday, but it wasn't enough as Manchester City secured a fourth straight league title by beating West Ham 3-1 at home.

At least the late goal made sure the season ended with a festive atmosphere on a day when any hopes of an unlikely title win quickly disappeared.

Mikel Arteta's team entered the day with a chance of earning the club's first league title since the 2003-04 'Invincibles' side, but needed to both beat Everton and hope City would somehow drop points against West Ham.

But a raucous Emirates Stadium was quickly brought back down to earth when news came through that City were already 2-0 up inside 20 minutes of their game in Manchester.

The mood darkened further after Idrissa Gueye's deflected free kick gave Everton the lead after 40 minutes.

A glimmer of hope sprang up when Takehiro Tomiyasu quickly equalised for Arsenal and West Ham pulled a goal back before the break.

But by the time Havertz put Arsenal ahead from close range, City had restored their two-goal advantage to ensure there was no last-minute drama.

“If we do what we have to do, we're going to be closer and at the end we will win it,” Arteta said after the game. “When? I don't know. But if we keep knocking and being that close, in the end that will happen.”

Arteta also pointed to the home defeat by Aston Villa and City’s result against Tottenham Hotspur more recently as crucial moments in the season.

“You know, in the first half it should have been 4-0. And maybe the story will have been different. But what happened last Tuesday (City beating Spurs at home), maybe today we are champions. These are the margins, they are so, so, so small. And a credit as well to the club and the team, because you’re doing this against the best team in the history of the Premier League by far.”

It is the second year in a row that Arsenal finished in second place behind City, but there is still a sense of progress.

Last year, the Gunners topped the standings for much of the season before a late collapse saw them finish five points behind City. This year the gap was two points as Arsenal took the fight to the final day.

Arsenal finished on 89 points, their second highest points total ever in the Premier League.

Also, the team set a club record for most wins - 28 - and goals scored - 91 - in a Premier League season.
