|
Technology has become an inseparable part of our lives in the 21st century. However, have we ever wondered its impact on our daily language? Dr Lee will bring us to explore this topic using witty dialogues from different context.
As a sociolinguist, Carmen Lee has always been fascinated by how human language works in today’s society. For over 10 years, she has been interested in what happens to language when it moves to the online world. She is currently Associate Professor in English at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, where she teaches and research on various subjects in applied linguistics and sociolinguistics. Her research focuses on the relationship between language, literacy, and identity on the internet. Carmen has presented her research in Asia, North America and Europe. She is co-author of the book Language Online (Routledge, 2013) and is currently working on another book for Routledge, Multilingualism Online. At TEDxHKUST, Carmen will discuss public concerns about ‘falling standards in English’ in relation to language on the internet. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx |
