People make mistakes, but accidentally launching a nuclear strike that would have destroyed the Earth would have been the biggest and last mistake anyone would have ever made. The US was in the midst of the Cold War with Russia, and a computer system for detecting Russian missiles was relied on to protect America, but one problem, it wasn't human proof.
