video thumbnail
Cultural norms for appearance present unrealistic standards or beauty which may contribute to woman's dissatisfaction. This is a presentation of the effects that body shaming and ideal body standard have on people's lives. It explores the ways that body image and ideal body standards vary depending on the culture of different countries. I am currently a senior at ETSU majoring in International Affairs with a minor in Psychology. I am originally from Vientiane, Laos. Wanting to pursue a higher education, I decided to come to the United States. I am a creative art scholar, and I am currently working for the East Tennessean, the ETSU newspaper, as an advertising assistant manager. I am passionate in discussing eating disorders, as I had experience it in the past. My biggest dream is to be working for the United Nations as a humanitarian. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
