Rafael Nadal currently holds the most Grand Slam titles, maybe the most important tennis record. But who has the most ATP Finals wins? Who are the 'world champions' of tennis up to 2022? The ATP Tour ending Finals and the ATP Masters 1000 are big tennis titles too, after all. Did you know the ATP Finals were called the world championship of Tennis in the past? This video will show you all the Tennis world champions, the Masters Cup winners, the ATP Finals title holders, however you want to call them. THE HISTORY OF THE ATP FINALS From 1970 - 89 the tournament was known as the Masters Grand Prix on the Grand Prix Tennis Tour. During that time there was a rivaling season ending event, the WCT Finals held in Texas annually. The Masters Grand Prix was hosted by several different cities before being played throughout the entire 80s in Madison Square Garden in New York. While John McEnroe dominated the WCT Finals, Ilie Nastase won 4 Masters titles in the 1970s and Ivan Lendl dominated the 80s, reaching the Final 9 consecutive times. In the 1990s the Tour Finals were played in Germany and known as the ATP World Tour Championships with the winner being called the Tennis world champion. With Boris Becker and Michael Stich the Germans could see two home heros win the event. It was Pete Sampras, however, who dominated the ATP World Tour Championships just like the Grand Slams in the 1990s. In 2000 the ATP rebranded the event as the Tennis Masters Cup and moved it around again. Lisbon, Sydney, Houston and 5 times Shanghai hosted the Tennis Tour Finals. Again a tennis player won 4 Finals titles: Roger Federer. Just like he dominated at Wimbledon, the Australian Open and US Open as well as many other ATP tournaments, Federer was nearly unbeatable at the Masters Cup. In 2009 the ATP Tour undertook some changes and gave Shanghai an ATP Masters 1000 tournament, replacing the Madrid Masters (which then switched to clay and replaced the Hamburg Masters). The season ending event was now played in the O2 Arena in London as the ATP World Tour Finals. In 2010 Rafael Nadal became the first tennis player in history to win 3 Grand Slams on 3 surfaces in the same season and then reached the final of the ATP World Tour Finals too. However, it was Roger Federer who took the title once again and then set a new record in Tennis history in 2011. In 2012 - 2015 Novak Djokovic set a record by winning 4 Finals titles in a row, defeating Federer and Nadal on the way. After his non calendar year Grand Slam Djokovic reached the final in 2016 again but lost the match as well as the year end No1 ATP Ranking to Andy Murray. With 5 titles in the late 2016 ATP Tour season the Scot became the first non Big 3 Tennis player to be No1 in the world since 2003. Since 2017 the name of the tournament was shortened to just "ATP Finals". Grigor Dimitrov, Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev won the biggest titles in their Tennis careers. In 2021 in Turin, Italy, Medvedev and Zverev both played the final with the chance to win a second ATP Finals title. In the 2022 ATP season Novak Djokovic missed out on many tournaments, including the Australian Open and US Open and the Sunshine Double. Towards the end of the 2022 season that Carlos Alcaraz finished as the youngest no 1 player in tennis history the Serb showed that he is still one of if not the best tennis player in the world. Djokovic won his 6th ATP Finals title equaling Roger Federer's record. The ATP Finals will stay in Turin until at least 2025.
