PART 1 Introduction

QUESTIONS
Let’s talk about your house.
Do you live in a house or a flat?
What’s your favourite room?
Is there anything you want to change about that room?

ANSWERS and COMMENTS
This is a transitionary time for me = a time of change
I would say my favourite room is the living space 😀A nice way to give an opinion
It’s filled with personal mementos = personal souvenirs
It would be really nice, if this room opened up into the kitchen 😀Nice use of conditional for a change you want to make
Because I have a toddler it’s nice to keep an eye on him = "a ‘toddler’ is a young child
/ ‘keep an eye on = look after and watch carefully"

Part 1 Topic - Pets

QUESTIONS
Do you have a pet?
Do you like animals?
Did you have a pet as a child?

ANSWERS and COMMENTS

I do, in fact I have two pets, I have two cats 😀Good way to clarify and give more information

One is a black cat with some white markings = shapes or patterns on the surface (of the fur)

I do like animals, but I don’t like the upkeep of animals = the process of giving them what they need (used for animals, people and buildings)

It’s not always nice to have to do the daily upkeep 😀notice the repeated use of ‘upkeep’ but with a new collocation - ‘do the daily upkeep’

I had a few pets but the main pet that I had was a cat, a Siamese cat named Dodger who in fact lived for 18 years and passed away just two years ago 😀Good use of relative clauses make complex sentences showing off good range of grammar

Passed away = died

Part 1 Topic - Rubbish

QUESTIONS
What do people usually do with rubbish in your country?
What do you think when you see rubbish on the roads?
Do you ever recycled paper and plastic?

ANSWERS and COMMENTS
It’s becoming more popular to recycle…things that can be recycled…if the recycling is actually being recycled 😀Notice that although Vanessa repeats the word ‘recycled’, she is using it in different forms, showings can use it flexibly
Some people feel sceptical and don’t even recycle = Have doubts about something, don’t fully believe it
It’s kind of mind-blowing to me = Extremely surprising
It’s a no-brainer, of course I will pick up my trash = An easy decision to make, or simple question to answer

Part 2 Topic - CUE CARD

Describe a friend or a person who encouraged you to achieve a goal.

You should say:

– Who this person is
– What this person encouraged you to do
– How this person helped you

And explain why this encouragement help you to achieve the goal

ANSWERS and COMMENTS
I dropped out of the class = Stopped attending a class

She helped me to really start from the beginning, step by step = One step at a time

I caught on a little bit more = Understood

She gave me a wonderful idea which was to become an au pair = Live with a family in a foreign country to learn the language, and look after the children

She helped me to sign up, create a profile.. 😀Notice with the second verb (create), we can leave out the the infinitive ‘to’ of the verb (help). This omission of the ‘to’ is common in natural speech.
