The JAAC, which has traders at the forefront in most parts of the state, has been seeking the provision of electricity as per hydropower generation cost in AJK, subsidised wheat flour and an end to the privileges of the elite class.
Violent Protests: Recently, protests erupted in the Pakistan-controlled part of Kashmir due to rising costs of food, fuel, and utility bills. These demonstrations have been driven by outrage over soaring electricity bills and flour prices in a region that has long suffered economically because of its status as a conflict zone.
Incident Details: During these protests, a police officer was killed in Dadyal town. Traders in some cities pulled their shutters down, and protesters burned tires to express their anger.
Government Response: Chaudhry Anwarul Haq, the prime minister in Pakistan-held Kashmir, expressed readiness to consider the protesters’ demands but urged them not to resort to violence. Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari convened a meeting to discuss ways to calm the situation.
