Eating Disorders on the Rise

Univsersity of Iowa Student Health and Wellness has seen a recent spike in patients suffering with eating disorders. In the midst of National Eating Disorder Awareness Week, the spotlight is on this invisible illness. Student organization Body Image and Eating Disorder Awareness, or BIEADA, held numerous events throughout the week. At Wednesday’s Student Health and Wellness Fair, they promoted self-care and body positivity. Student Health and Wellness dietician JoAnn Daehler-Miller says around 20 percent of new patients coming to see her have eating disorders. With midterms and spring break trips on the horizon, she said college students often report the illness in the spring semester. However, the sooner a student seeks help with an eating disorder, the less serious it has to be.
