Number 15: Biggest Mammal: The Blue Whale

Blue whales are considered the largest mammals to have ever existed (and still existing). They hold this title just for nothing, they can grow to lengths of up to 100 feet and weigh over 180,000kg. The blue whale has a large flattened head and a long, tapered body that ends in large, triangular flukes. The tongue of a blue whale can weigh up to that of an average-sized elephant and their hearts can weigh up to a car. For such massive animals, they sure have the diet to go along with it. Their preferred meal is the tiny krill that looks like a shrimp. One may wonder how a tiny creature like that can satisfy the appetite of the blue whale. In a day, an adult blue whale can consume up to 1,800kg worth of krill. To feed, the blue whale gulps in an enormous amount of water and then filter the water through their fringed plates of baleen that is attached to their upper jaw. They then force the water out through the fringed plates, leaving behind thousands of krill that are then swallowed. The color of the blue whale is true blue while underwater but mottled blue-gray while on the surface. The underbelly of the blue whale is home to millions of microorganisms that live in their skin, giving them a yellowish hue. They can be found in all oceans except the Arctic, and usually in pairs or at most, a small group. Blue whales are easily the loudest animals on earth and their cries are as loud as jet engines. It is also thought that they can hear each other from as far as 1,000 miles apart. Blue whales live long, the oldest was said to have lived about 110 years.

Number 14: Biggest Land Mammal: The African Elephant

The African elephant is the biggest land animal on Earth. They can be easily identified by their large ears that look almost like the continent of Africa. African elephants play a critical role in the ecosystem and are known as ecosystem engineers by shaping their habitat in several ways. African elephants use their tusks to dig up dry riverbeds to create watering holes during the dry season so many animals can get water to drink. Dung beetles make their home in the African elephants’ dung and the seeds in their dung help plant trees. The large ears of the African elephant help then radiate heat and keep them cool. However, the heat can sometimes become too much, causing the elephants to develop a love for water. They would often suck water into their trunks and spray it all over themselves. The trunk of the African elephant is actually a long nose that it uses to breathe, smell, trumpet, drink, and grab things. It contains about 40,000 muscles. African elephants also have tusks that they use in digging for food, water, and stripping the bark of trees. The tusks of males are bigger than that of females and they also use it to battle one another. Such large animals will need the food to back up their weight. An African elephant will consume about 135kg of roots, grasses, fruit, and bark in a single day.

Number 13: Biggest Reptile: Saltwater Crocodile

Saltwater crocodiles are considered Earth’s biggest living crocodiles. It is also quite dangerous and has the tag of the animal most likely to eat a human. The average size of a male saltwater crocodile is about 17 feet and can weigh up to 450kg, but females are slightly smaller. There are specimens that have been known to weigh almost 1,000kg and reach a length of 23 feet. They populate brackish waters and can be found in freshwater regions of Asia, India, and northern Australia.....
